CLONE WARS TRAILER : Thought I'd start a post about the effects in the Clone Wars trailer. I'm still trying to recover from visual overload. The battle sceneslook incredible. How may battledroid designs are there now?! And thewalkers, ships, spiderbot things, hamster wheel tanks, clonetroopersfighting droids. ... wow! Makes the Gungan/Droid battle look like arehearsal. Beautiful warm lighting...swirving Robotech missiles!!Looks like Lucas is giving the bitching fans what they want thistime... enough to kill them !The weak parts were some of the composited actor shots. They lookedshitty, but I imagine they're unfinished.Overall, Yoda looks really good. He looks alot like Yoda from EmpireStrikes Back, only more alive. The Yoda from Ep1 looked like Yoda'sangry brother. The city shots look super. Like a real city, not like a bunch oflayered matte shots. CLONE WARS TRAILER : The asteroid exploding was nice. Everything looks so detailed.I thought Phantom Menace was detailed, but this looks like 4X thedetail in every shot. It's great to watch how even in the trailer you can see that George ishaving fun directing the scenes that were never filmed on DV. It seemsthere is some nice tools at ILM that gives George his documentary style offilming those scenes (where the camera doesn't "know" fully what's happeningand reacts to the special effects).He still tends too much into those slow pans or slow tilts. It seems everydirector these days is using that during introduction shots. If you havedownloaded the trailer, look at the sequence 15seconds into it. I preferhis old trilogy-style static shots to a special effect. Those slow movesare often overused today in movies and they just don't match with the styleof the shot just before or right after. That's why many people just scream"Fake CGI" when it's only a matter of the audience viewing the scene almostfrom a different POV when it switches to a special effects shot. CLONE WARS TRAILER : Episode 1 lacked kinetic camera movements during the end battle. Forsomething, it did not during the podrace. "Framing" special effects isoften not cared as importantly as framing a normal scene, and it's a shame.The podrace was very good in giving a realistic space/movement to thespecial effects. George used every trick in his pocket. Special effectswere filmed from overhead far away, up close, at every angle possible andwith different zoom focus. The FOV constantly changed depending on thefocus of the action during key sequences. There were some great chase views(either in front or from the rear) that made the audience believe in thespecial effect. It reminded me greatly of the bike chase in Return of theJedi. Looking back at that scene you know it's impossible yet you believecompletely in what happens.Well, it wasn't *that* bad during the gungan vs. droid sequence, but itstill had way too much of those swooping perfect crane-type shots. It wascorrect for any shot that focused on the space/air battle (considering thatthe original trilogy's space battles were perfectly framed shots), but notground action scenes imho. The only thing that looked a little imperfectwas some shakes added during explosions. Now I'll tell you, imho it's theone of the worst sins special effects guys are doing these days. It'sstupid to have perfectly framed shots that shakes during an explosion. Stopdoing that! The audience doesn't need the camera reaction to notice how bigthe explosion is lol
