COMEDIAN TRAILER : Oh, had ik gemist. Maar dank voor de tip! Ik heb er gelijk een mailtjevoor mijn mailinglist van gemaakt. Die ik hieronder plak:Sender: Reply-To: Date: Sun, 9 Feb 2003 17:03:47 +0100From: ReindeR Rustema To: Multiple recipients of fun - Sent by Subject: fun: The Comedian trailerDeze is geweldig! Fresh from the success of his sitcom, comedian Jerry Seinfeld decided todo the unimaginable: he completely retired his stand-up act, electing tostart over again by developing entirely new material. "Comedian" followsSeinfeld through this process, as he rehearses in front of small comedyclub audiences, meets with fellow comics and finally appears before anational audience.Er is nog geen Nederlandse release datum voor deze film bekend, ik denkzelfs dat er nog geen distributeur voor is. Op 13 mei komt de DVD uit.

COMEDIAN TRAILER : # stars based on 4 stars: 3Reviewed by: Harvey KartenMiramax PicturesDirected by: Christian CharlesCast: Jerry Seinfeld, Jay Leno, Bill Cosby, Robert Klein, ColinQuinn, Garry Shandling, George Wallace, Ray Romano, ChrisRock, Orny Adams, George ShapiroScreened at: Loews Lincoln Sq. NYC 10/13/02 Take it from a guy with some three decades of teaching highschool social studies under his belt: no matter how many timesyou give the same lessons to the same-age, captive audience, there's always the fear that your mind will go blank, that you won'tget any response whatever form the class, that you won't haveenough material to fill the forty minutes. No wonder, then, that astand-up comedian the type of profession that's not unlike that ofteaching will sweat and pace and let off steam backstage whilewaiting to go out to the crowd. It matters not whether he or she isperforming before a small group at New York Bitter End Caf??? or inCarnegie Hall as Jackie Mason has done several times. Theanxiety is there. What's more the tension is present even if, likeJerry Seinfeld, you have a solid reputation behind you and theknowledge that just walking out on the floor will bring youraudience to its feet.

COMEDIAN TRAILER : The premise of Christian Charles' documentary, then, is theangst faced by experienced comic and newcomer alike, the stagefright that can overcome even the most experienced performer. We can believe that the hyper, upcoming comedian Orny Adamswould probably have to go to the bathroom five minutes beforemaking his presence felt before a live audience. After all Orny istwenty-nine years old and has not enjoyed nearly the successthat has befallen Jerry Seinfeld. But Mr. Adams who shares thespotlight in this brief, eighty-one minute doc is the very type you'dexpect to tense up before picking up the mic. He's hyper, heappears to thinks he deserves accolades simply because he hassurvived on stage for a few years, and director Christian Charles evokes a surpringly spontaneous backstage performance fromAdams who seems impervious to the notion that his arrogancecould alienate the audience for "Comedian."

COMEDIAN TRAILER : Adams is the more interesting person to watch, probablybecause he's so insecure that Mr. Charles can get a moredynamic off-stage performance from him that he could withSeinfeld. Talking as though he's ready to buy his first walkingcane, Adams laments that he's 29 years old, he's not sure he'sgoing anywhere (at least not when he compares himself toCOMEDIANRATING: 7/10 For more reviews and movie trailers, visit PLOT:A behind-the-scenes look at the professional life of comedian/actor JerrySeinfeld as he attempts to master a new stand-up routine on the road, as well asa parallel view of another up-and-coming comedian, who seems to have all theright ingredients to "make it" as a laugh-meister, but just can't seem to hitit. Chris Rock, Jay Leno, Garry Shandling, Bill Cosby and various othercomics...ensue. CRITIQUE:A decent, if not slightly motivational, look at the behind-the-scenes workingsof what comedians have to go through in order to perfect their craft, whichunlike what some might think, takes a lot of time, effort, practice and mypersonal favorite...balls. One of the film's best scenes comes early on, as weactually get to witness the Jerry Seinfeld, the man behind one of the mostsuccessful TV sitcoms of all-time, the multi-millionaire, the man who seeminglynever messes up a joke, completely forget what he had planned to say in front ofa real-life club audience, of which at least one member, voices her louddisapproval ("Is this your first time doing this?"). Sure, Seinfeld ultimatelyfinishes his show, shakes a few hands, spitballs jokes with his fellow comediansand jumps into his limo/Porsche/private jet, but keeps you glued to the screen,if only to find out why, despite his many obvious luxuries, he still feels theneed to make others laugh. Another very interesting moment in this movie ispresented when legendary comic Bill Cosby sits alone with Seinfeld and offershis two-bits on what it all means (and you actually get to hear both of the"squeaky clean" comedians swear in the movie...kewl!). In fact, I really enjoyedmost of this film, especially all the backstage riffing, like Chris Rock poppingby for a drink, Gary Shandling busting balls, Jay Leno boring us with his usualshpiel about how he never touches any of his "Tonight Show" earnings, and anumber of others. The downside to the film is that it ultimately didn't reallygive me a much deeper understanding of where comedy "comes from" or why onecomic makes it over another, but did offer several theories, stories andentertaining attempts by all. It also showcases a younger, more arrogant, comic named Orny Adams, who is anideal case study of how NOT to "make it" in the biz. The guy doesn't really seemto love what he's doing as much as he loves the idea of making it or being acelebrity and makes a lot of foolish comments throughout the film. He's alsoquite neurotic and a borderline manic-depressive, but ironically...fun to watch. The sad part is that some of his material is actually pretty funny, but he can'tseem to get past his own attitude in order to enjoy any of it (at one point, hegets an amazing piece of news for his career, but spends the next 5 minutescalling people to tell them about it and then gets depressed again-dude, it'scomedy...cheer up!!). The sadder part is that I could sort of see myself in some

COMEDIAN TRAILER : Though it's very funny, the trailer for Comedian contains approximately zeroseconds of footage from the film. I thought this would be an important factto mention, as the old bait-and-switch routine may not give you grounds toask the theatre manager for your money back after you realize the film isn'tat all what you'd thought it would be (read: funny). Comedian is, instead,a documentary about two stand-up comedians trying to turn their wittyruminations into a successful comedy routine. The only reason you've heardof the film is because one of those comedians is Jerry Seinfeld. The filmwas made by Christian Charles, who worked with Seinfeld on those AmericanExpress commercials. After retiring all of his material in the 1998 I'm Telling You for the LastTime tour (which you may have seen on HBO), Seinfeld finds himself in theunusual position of starting his career over from scratch. We see himtrying out new material in dank New York comedy clubs, and we hear peoplelaugh at said material. But Seinfeld has always been a mediocre comedian(doubters should watch Curb Your Enthusiasm to see where the real creativityof Seinfeld lay). Audiences are laughing at him because he's JerrySeinfeld, not because he's particularly funny. At one point, they laugh athim because he forgets his own material.
