HALF LIFE 2 TRAILER : On Sun, 18 May 2003 01:09:23 -0400, "Go-ta Maga-nus" wrote:I've watched both - Halo 2 and HL2 - trailers now, and HL2 did impressme. Halo 2 was ho-hum. I'm anxiously awaiting Halo for PC, and I'mprobably going to buy Halo 2 for my xbox. But the trailer wasdisappointing. First, why did Bungie change the appearance of theMark V armour? The former version with the smooth reflective visorlooks way more cool than the structured thing now. Blech! Also thedual weapon (John Woo style) mode looks like crap. As if he holds outtwo stiff cannons in front of him. No recoil! The pistol looks waybetter than that. Jacking ghosts. Okay. And of course, the marinesand the seargeant from Halo 1 all reappear, although they all died inthe first game. Plot hole! When I watched the Half-Life 2 trailer I was flabbergasted. My firstthought was: that's just impossible! No program can do that. Afterthree times watching this thing, I decided that movies are nowoutdated. You can play your own movies now. Facial expressions, materiel that behaves 'real', intelligent allies, cool vehiclesteering (I especially like the fact that one can steer the vehicleone way while at the same looking into a different direction! Makesturning and taking curves much more natural in my opinion.),incredible aliens. And City 17 looks definitely Eastern European!Almost like home to me! It gives this a retro-1945ish feeling.Creepy, yet at the same familiar. Did the level designers visitWarsaw or what? They did an amazing job! Incredibly detailed. HALF LIFE 2 TRAILER : Watched the near 600MB video of Half-Life 2 in action... and it makes melaugh at DOOM III. For all that people love Quake and DOOM and stuff,Half-Life and Half-Life 2 are the only games to truly make REALimprovements.Tech demos don't impress me. I'm not a technomasturbator that I need perfectdynamic lighting, ultra-bump mapped textures, and so forth.1) Artificial intelligence2) Story3) Environment interactivity4) Physics5) Music and audio workGraphics come in 6th with me, behind music and sound even. One of the bestparts of Halo was the soundtrack - truly magnificent.DOOM III is the first Unreal to me. Pretty, but it's main use is to sell theengine to other developers. (Though the Source engine seems damnedattractive in many ways - the graphics, again, secondary to the other stuffit gives.)Between Half-Life 2, Deus Ex 2, Halo PC (and Halo 2), there are some fineFPS' coming... HALF LIFE 2 TRAILER : The hl2 demo *is* good, but thb you haven't anytyhing to compare it toreally have you?We don't really know much about Doom 3 at all. We have seen a few alphastage levels from over a year ago and about a minute of video...I refuse todamn the game on this evidence.HL2 on the other hand we have seen ten times as much of thanks to the E3frenzy.I just got the alpha yesterday since I now have a PC that will shift it. It crashes all the time (it's an alpha) but the lighting and shadows look fantastic. Seems to have some nice physics too.-- * -* - Nicotine, valium, vicadin, marijuana, ecstasy, and alcohol.* - C-c-c-c-c-cocaine ...* -Provided they can marry the atmosphere with a decent story and plenty ofbrilliant sequences like the bathroom one it should be good...its ages sincewe had a game with a really sinister atmosphere. HALF LIFE 2 TRAILER : Heres a tip with the alpha, delete the .cfg file completley, it will make abetter one itself.Yeah I tried that ... still bugs out on my Athlon XP / Radeon rig continually. There were some CRC errors on the CD I burned it onto though, so that's probably it ...-- * -* - Nicotine, valium, vicadin, marijuana, ecstasy, and alcohol.* - C-c-c-c-c-cocaine ...* - Runs very well on my xp+radeon rig. Assuming some more optimizations, any present higher-end machine will do fine in this game.On Thu, 10 Jul 2003 16:48:03 GMT, "Roger Squires" wrote:Well, my humble Leadtek GeF 2 Ti 64Mb just fried itself finally last night(the fan has been on the blink for 12mths+ now - had it for about 17 mths intotal); lucky I have my trusty Voodoo 3 out of my 2nd system to get by with.Time for a new vid card, one that can at least 'cope' with HL2 >;-).Ok, the system otherwise is an Epox 8KHA+, 256Mb DDR (soon to be 512), AMD1600XP (1.4GHz), 40Gb 7200 RPM Western Dig HDD. HALF LIFE 2 TRAILER : What's the recommended 'mid-range' vid card that might be able to copeadequately on this system? I mean, I play games like RTCW (+ET), MOH:AA,Morrowind, SOF2 & many others ok-ish now, but I'd like to move up & playsomething like HL2 at a *decent* average-ish detail level/frame rate. Am Ijust dreamin & is it time for a whole new mobo/cpu/system combo or can a newvid card squeeze the most out of this rig for another year or so (includinga cpu upgrade within 6 mths I guess)...?I'm not reall interested in ATI/Radeons (devil you know ;-), so I guess I'mleft with the choice of GeForce 4 (?) vs. GeForce FX. For example, what FXmodel compares with GeF 4 4200-4800? What more will I get out of a new FX?Are the drivers stable? The one thing I *really* didn't like about my old Leadtek GeF is the TV Outletterbox format - the new card needs to be a bit smarter about its tv outfeatures hopefully.
