MOVIES TRAILERS : It occurs to me that with all the discussions here about various movietrailers (Batman Forever, Die Hard, Outbreak, etc.), why not a newsgroupdedicated solely to trailers themselves? It's been said many a time thattrailers have become so sophisticated that they are practically films inthemselves (wasn't it Rolling Stone that did a review of the Body ofEvidence *trailer*, not the film, when it came out?)...I believe there'seven a regular program on E! (I don't get this channel) that shows onlycoming attractions trailers. MOVIES TRAILERS : I think I have a good idea of what is the most over used canned sound effectin movies and TV today --at least in terms of its up front prominence. Andthat sound is this digital delayed screaming guitar feedback sound effectthat is used all the time to punctuate moments of tension. The sound effectrises from zero volume smoothly upward with a digital delay effect appliedto add echo and broadness to the distorted guitar tone. The sound effectfades off in a similar manner to its drift in.For instance, I heard this sound effect a couple times alone this evening.On one of the HBO channels, "Vertical Limit" was showing. That sound poppedup there. The HBO America Undercover special "Monica: In Black and White"had the same sound effect played there --and in a common fashion where thesound effect functions as a kind of music scoring piece. I rememberflipping through the channels last night and hearing the effect pop up in"3000 Miles to Graceland" (don't worry I didn't watch remotely the entirefilm, I continued flipping channels). MOVIES TRAILERS : I think I first heard the sound effect on "X-Files" TV series, and it isdefinitely in the "X-Files: Fight the Future" motion picture (just go tochapter 14 and you'll hear it there, notably at chapter 14 to 15transition). I seem to even recall a perscription drug commercial evenusing the canned sound effect. I mean it is shamelessly all over the placeand really falling apart badly into a kind of schtick.It is fairly certain that in 10 or 20 years, we'll look back at TV shows,movies, trailers, commercial and other forms of media using this effect andlaugh at it like we will all those movie trailers that have all thebass-loaded whoosh sounds punctuating flying words on the screen. Thisstuff is every bit as bad as those fake tinkle sounds and disco-ey electricdrum thingies we used to hear too much in the 1970's.I know sound bed in films are very manufactured things and feature manycanned elements to them. However with the case of this guitar sound effectitem, it is often appearing as a kind of part of the score --and to me it isjust starting to come off like generic stock music.
