NEMO TRAILER : Nemo, which takes place mostly underwater, is about the father-sonrelationship between two clownfish. After a brief prologue that depicts afairly traumatic shark attack (it's just the beginning - what else would youexpect from a children's film that references Jaws, Psycho and The Shining?)that takes the lives of the wife and 399 soon-to-be-hatched eggs of Marlin(Albert Brooks), the story proper begins on the first day of school for thetitular Nemo (Alexander Gould), who is the sole spawn to survive theassault. The now-agoraphobic Marlin is understandably cautious aboutletting go of his only child for the first time, especially since Nemo has agimpy fin.Much to the dismay of Marlin, Nemo's teacher takes his class to the reef'sdrop-off and, while following carefully behind, Marlin is horrified to seeNemo and some friends daring each other to swim over the edge. Words aresaid, feelings are hurt and, long story short, Nemo gets scooped up by adiver and crammed into a fish tank owned by a Sydney dentist (after a quickdig at Americans - see, it's not just Dogville).

NEMO TRAILER : The rest of the story unfolds in two parts: The suddenly courageous Marlinteams up with a lunatic fish suffering from attention deficit disorder (adrop-dead hysterical Ellen DeGeneres) to track down his boy, and Nemoattempts to escape the tank before he becomes the birthday present to thedentist's fish-killing niece. The tale is very reminiscent of Toy Story, where Buzz and the other toys are trying to find and rescue Woody, who isabout to be quartered by demon child Sid.Nemo is written and directed by Andrew Stanton, the co-director of A Bug'sLife and a scribe on every one of Pixar's feature films (and the SoCal voiceof current-surfing sea turtle Crush here). He fills this picture withbreathtaking color and unbelievably real-looking animation. Even for aPixar film, Nemo sets a new standard for terrifying (literally) highs andlows so devastating they'll make you tear up. Nemo creates a very highbenchmark for this summer's other films to strive to best, and I don't thinkany of them will.

The film's wonderful voice talent features a newcomedic duo, Albert Brooks and Ellen DeGeneres, playing fish named Marlin andDory. Brooks, who can do worried better than just about anyone, plays a singledad -- sadly, kids' movies rarely feature families with both parents -- whoseson, Nemo (voiced by Alexander Gould), is off to his first day at school. Theever-paranoid Marlin fears that harm will come to his son, as it does. The restof the movie has two parallel story threads, one about Marlin, with Dory's help, trying to find Nemo, and another about Nemo trying to escape his new confinementin order to be reunited with his father.

NEMO TRAILER : Most of movie's enjoyment comes from DeGeneres's goofy rendition of the doofusDory, a blue tang fish with a short term memory problem and with a brain aboutthe size of a grain of sand. Her best scene occurs when she decides to mimic awhale in order to converse with it. DeGeneres was born to do whale.Brooks's material isn't nearly as good as DeGeneres's. The best he ever gets ishis on-going joke that he's a clown fish who is constitutionally incapable oftelling a funny joke. Whenever he attempts to tell one, he starts rambling andends up losing his fish audience long before he ever gets anywhere near a punchline. The problem with the voice talent is that they overwhelm their fish charactersmore so than any previous Pixar movie. They seem less like talking fish thanhuman actors are verbally hamming it up in front of unseen microphones. Ourpacked audience, filled with munchkins, found lots to like but nothing togenerate big laughs.

NEMO TRAILER : More so than the previous Pixar pictures, FINDING NEMO is really a kids' movie. And, since the movie's demographics will probably skew much lower in age, thereare a couple of troubling points. For the first time, Pixar stoops to bathroomhumor, using both farting and belching jokes. More troublesome is the messagethe film gives to young owners of pet fish. Several times, some of the fish wholive in a home-sized aquarium talk about "hitching a ride on the porcelainexpress" as a way to escape. The fish believe that, if they are flushed downthe toilet or washed down the sink, they will escape and find their freedom andhappiness. One suspects that, after seeing FINDING NEMO, a fair number ofyoungsters may kill their pets while trying to do them a favor by flushing themto freedom. The movie's funniest episode involves three sharks who are on the wagon. At anAA-like meeting, they vow, "Fish are our friends, not food." The lead sharkstarts the meeting by proclaiming, "It has been three weeks since my last fish." Fish abstinence, however, proves difficult when a trickle of blood floats
