STAR WARS TRAILERS : I wish to God that other alienated consumer weasels like myself wouldwithhold their money from such monstrous recycling nightmares. I like theidea of informing the universe that the defining moment of my generation,or of my year, or even of my weekend, will not be advertised as such. There used to be a time when creating the perfect product was moreimportant than creating the perfect marketing and packaging. Which isalso why I'll be avoiding Woodstock 99. Hello, we DID that already! Tryto arrange for something NEW and interesting, would you? Thanks. There is something very depressing about a culture that recycles itself soopenly. The fact that we are in the 90s, and "retro 80s" is consideredtrendy and fashionable. Hey, didn't we just DO the 80s? Are we soutterly without soul that we have to try to remember what happened10 years ago, instead of breaking new ground? STAR WARS TRAILERS : I don't think that Computer generated creatures have reached the level thatmakes the look realistic. I can't look at the creatures in the Star Warstrailers, Starship troopers and Mars Attacks without thinking - hmm... theyare getting better at that.Give me a guy in a monster suite any day and a bunch of minatures ratherthan Computer Generated bad guys and space ships.I'll be looking forward to Yoda's sideburns and thats about all :)I agree completely. I seriously hope that the new Star Wars film doesn't end up being one of this year's pile of shit blockbusters. From the looks of the trailer, I have my doubts. How can anyone be excited about the film after seeing *that*?!Forget FX. TPM will have great effects. But it's the story thatcounts, and GL has proven that he knows how to write a great storythat people care about. People aren't going insane (paying fulladmission to see trailer, planning to camp out 3 days before movieopens) because they think the CGI effects will kick ass and be betterthan Titanic. They are passionate about Star Wars. Ewan McGregorwould not take part in summer blockbuster crap. TPM did not gothrough 20 different writers and get screened by test audiences andthen get rewritten again to be sure it reaches the biggest possiblemarket . It is Lucas's story period. GL is putting his dick out onthe chopping block. If the movie is simply summer blockbuster crap,he will be castrated by the legions of die hard fans. STAR WARS TRAILERS : I would disagree. I do not count CGI graphics as "great effects". They look fake and uninspiring.With...? "Star Wars"? Those films were hardly "great stories" IMHO. Sure, they're fun to watch, but I wouldn't consider any of them even close to being one of the 100 best films ever made.Everyone has his/her price. Being in the first "Star Wars" film since 1983 is not something that an actor passes up, even if the film is crap. Also: Samuel L. Jackson in a "Star Wars" film? Come on!I don't agree with you here. Simply put, STAR WARS is our generation'sgreatest myth. If you can think of another story that's reached as manypeople, culturally, emotionally, and intellectually, please let me know.Lucas is a phenomenal storyteller. He's extremely educated on Carl Jung'stheories of archetypes and Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey. Basically, heransacked stories that have been told throughout every culture for thousandsof years. More specifically, the monomyth........ STAR WARS TRAILERS : The story itself couldn't be anymore simplistic. Lucas just changed thebackdrop to outerspace, and the genre to science fiction/fantasy.If you judge SW on a superficial level, you're bound to think it's cheesyand "hardly great." If you can start to see the films from more of astorytelling standpoint, you'll realize there's some real genius behind itall, not just CGI and great music. And as a whole, the entire saga belongs on any top 100 list, although Iconsider those lists pointless anyways, IMHO.On Fri, 12 Mar 1999 18:03:13 -0500 "Ralphy Wiggum" wrote:then how come willow sucked? and why did lucas anticlimactically havethe empire destroyed by cookie monsters in return of the jedi?--Posted via Talkway - Surf Usenet at home, on the road, and by email -- always at Talkway.Willow sucked because if you look closely, Lucas and Ron Howard arebasically retelling the STAR WARS story in the realm of D&D. I'm too tiredto go into any parallels between the two films, but if you want Iwill........Plus the characters weren't fleshed out enough, nor did theaudience really give a shit about any of 'em. It was flat, dull, predictable, and that two headed dragon at the end? Geesh....... STAR WARS TRAILERS : Cookie monsters, eh? Shit, I wish Lucas would have done that....When I was six years old and saw JEDI for the first time, I loved the Ewoks.Of course, I was the prime target. Now, I respect the idea of the Ewoks, although I think the execution is awful at times. I mean, it's hard tosuspend disbelief when you keep thinking about midgets in teddy bearoutfits. However on paper, the idea of low tech good conquering high techevil, a la the Vietnam war, is exceptional. Lucas needed to make them moremenacing..........Side note: I saw the second trailer tonight, and I would need hours toexpress how impressed I was. Aside from the jaw dropping CGI effects(faceit, they're spectacular) the story is beginning to take shape, and it'sscope looks so grand. Any Kurosawa fans out there? If you've seen the HIDDENFORTRESS, you'll know what I'm talking about............
