TWO TOWERS TRAILER : Review: In a way, "The Two Towers" is in an unenviable position. From a box office perspective, it is the middle part of a trilogy of films, and as such effectively has neither a beginning nor an end. It's the movie whose ultimate goal is to get the characters from where they were at the end of the first installment to where they need to be to start the final chapter. It's almost subservient to the other parts. From a filmmaking point of view, "Towers" is an adaptation of probably the weakest segment of JRR Tolkien's "The Lord Of The Rings". Although the first half of the novel, with its famed Battle of Helm's Deep, is justly praised, the latter half -- dealing with Frodo and Sam's meanderings toward Mordor -- is often criticised as being, well, kind of boring. As such, some viewers may be surprised to find Frodo's role somewhat deemphasised in "The Two Towers". And with Merry and Pippin also despatched on an important but relatively uneventful side adventure, director Peter Jackson's focus instead falls on the trio of Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli, and the coming of war to Rohan. TWO TOWERS TRAILER : This is just one of a number of changes made in adapting Tolkien's book. Although some Tolkien adherents were disappointed by the omissions made from "The Fellowship Of The Ring", that film essentially followed the sketch of Tolkien's plot. In "The Two Towers", Jackson and his team have taken far greater liberties."The Two Towers" – The Grand Quest Continuesby Homer Yen(c) 2002Prior to a penultimate battle that could verywell be the beginning of the end for the denizensof Middle Earth, a weary king asks, "What can mendo against such reckless hate?" He is referringto the destruction that is about to be unleashedby the evil wizard Saruman (Christopher Lee), whohas created a potent army with the single-mindedgoal of destroying the world. One can onlyimagine the kind of epic clash that is about totake place. But, think about that for a momentand then multiply it by ten. Only then can youunderstand the level of ambitiousness, enormity, and scope of "The Two Towers." TWO TOWERS TRAILER : "The Two Towers" is a grand and impressiveproject that deserves much applause for itstechnical brilliance. That alone should beenough to motivate the general moviegoingaudience to take time out to watch the secondfilm in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. It is afully realized Middle Earth world replete withundiscovered lands, imaginative beings, bravewarriors and races of all kinds from etherealelves to the evil Uruk-Hai. Director PeterJackson's commitment to its realization isunconditional.Additionally, there are two unique elements ofthis film in the I-haven't-seen-that-beforecategory. The first is a character named Gollum, generated using CGI effects with such incrediblerealism and human-like expressions that you'dwonder if CGI might replace real live actors oneday in the future. After much skepticism, ourfavorite Hobbit, Frodo (Elijah Wook) acceptsGollum as his guide through Middle Earth's mosttreacherous terrain. Yet, it is clear thatGollum is attracted to the ring that Frodo hasbeen entrusted to destroy (the ring isinstrumental to the success of Saruman's wickedplans) and would like the ring for himself. TWO TOWERS TRAILER : Another incredible effect features a race calledthe Ents, living trees that populate an enchantedforest. While they have the demeanor of yourIn some ways, The Two Towers is better than The Fellowship of the Ring. Andin some ways, it's a little bit worse. The point is it's not the exact samemovie we saw in theatres last year, like, say, the first two Harry Potterfilms. For that reason alone, Towers deserves kudos. But of course thereare plenty of other reasons to heap massive amounts of praise upon it.Towers picks up right where Ring left off (and with absolutely no recap, sodon't bother going if you haven't seen the first flick, or at least read thebook), with the Fellowship splintered into three groups headed in differentdirections. Frodo (Elijah Wood) and Sam (Sean Astin) continue on their wayto destroy the all-powerful ring, while Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), Legolas(Orlando Bloom) and Gimli (John Rhys-Davies) try to track down thefrightening Uruk-hai warriors who have kidnapped Merry (Dominic Monaghan)and Pippin (Billy Boyd). TWO TOWERS TRAILER : The character we all thought died in Ring - Gandalf (Ian McKellen) - kicksoff Towers as writer-director Peter Jackson shows the wizard battling thatcrazy fire monster deal as they fell into a bottomless abyss. It's wickedcool, but we all know Gandalf survived because he's in Towers' trailer(which is, like, not wicked cool at all). Anyway, the three separatefactions of the Fellowship proceed on their merry way, encountering newcharacters and new (but still dire) situations involving more close calls, more bad injuries and more characters returning from the dead. The main problem I had with Towers (other than the evil not being nearly asmenacing this time around - Christopher Lee's Saruman and that flamingvagina thing remain tucked inside the two titular towers and, mostly, out ofboth sight and mind) is...well, downright confusion. I ain't the smartestguy in the world, but I'm no dummy, either. I haven't read the books, and Ifound it very difficult to keep track of where everyone was, not to mentionwhere they were headed. In Ring, the Fellowship went from Point A to PointB as a group; that's easy. But they're all over the place this time. Iknow there's an atlas of Middle-Earth in the books - maybe they should handout maps on the way into the theatre, or put one of those translucentdiagrams in the corner of the screen, like a videogame. Of course, itdoesn't help that the locations all have nutty names, like Rohan, Mordor andGondor (and don't get me started on the characters: We've got Saruman andSauron, Éowyn and Éomer, Arwen and Morwen, Boromir and Faramir).
